A Legacy Anchored in the Waters of Swansboro: The Story of Nancy Lee Fishing Charters

Nestled along the serene waters of Swansboro, North Carolina, Nancy Lee Fishing Charters stands as a testament to a rich maritime heritage and a family’s unwavering dedication to the sea. For over 45 years, this esteemed charter service has been guiding anglers through the bountiful waters of the Crystal Coast, offering unforgettable fishing experiences that blend tradition, expertise, and Southern hospitality.

The Genesis of a Maritime Passion

Captain Lee Manning’s affinity for the sea was cultivated from a tender age. Born and raised in coastal North Carolina, he spent his formative years exploring the ponds, creeks, rivers, sounds, and ocean that define the region’s landscape. His early exposure to charter boat fishing came through his uncle, who operated a charter business on Ocracoke Island, igniting a passion that would steer the course of his life.

Balancing his love for the sea with a commitment to education, Captain Lee pursued a B.S. degree in Industrial Technology from East Carolina University. He dedicated 21 years to teaching junior high school Industrial Arts, all while nurturing his maritime aspirations by running a charter boat business during weekends and summers. By 1980, he had earned his Master’s License and had already owned and operated three charter boats, each lovingly named after his wife, Nancy Lee

Building a Fleet and a Family Business

The launch of the Nancy Lee III in 1980 marked a significant milestone. Designed and built by Captain Lee himself, this 45-foot vessel, licensed for 23 passengers, became the cornerstone of his burgeoning charter business. The subsequent acquisition of the Nancy Lee IV, licensed for 27 passengers, in 1985 allowed Captain Lee to retire from teaching and focus entirely on his passion for fishing and sharing it with others.

The fleet continued to grow with the addition of the custom-built Nancy Lee V in 1996, a 50-foot vessel that further expanded their capacity to serve both headboat and private charter clients. Recognizing the need for a dedicated space to support their operations, Lee and Nancy acquired a 10-slip marina and store on the Intracoastal Waterway in Swansboro in 1997, solidifying their presence in the community.

Navigating the Rich Waters of the Crystal Coast

The strategic location of Swansboro offers immediate access to some of the most fertile fishing grounds along the North Carolina coast. Captain Lee’s intimate knowledge of the local waters, including nearshore rocks like Station Rock and Keypost, has been instrumental in providing clients with fruitful fishing excursions. These areas, located just a few miles from Bogue Inlet, are renowned for their rocky bottoms and coral structures, attracting a diverse array of fish species such as flounder, sea bass, and king mackerel.

Captain Lee’s expertise is not confined to navigation and fishing techniques; he also possesses a deep understanding of the local maritime lore. For instance, Station Rock earned its name from the days before advanced navigational tools, when fishermen would align the Swansboro Coast Guard Station’s lookout tower with the town’s water tower to locate the fishing spot.

A Commitment to Excellence and Community

Beyond the technical aspects of fishing, Nancy Lee Fishing Charters is distinguished by its commitment to customer satisfaction and community engagement. Captain Lee’s credentials, including a 100-Ton Master’s License, federal and state fishing licenses, radio licenses, and first-aid certification, ensure that clients are in capable and safe hands.

The charter service offers a range of options to cater to various preferences, including half-day and full-day trips, private charters, and specialized excursions like dolphin watching and sunset cruises. Their flexibility and dedication to providing personalized experiences have made them a favorite among both locals and visitors.

The physical storefront, located at 128 E. Corbett Avenue in Swansboro, serves as both a tackle shop and a fish market, further embedding the business within the fabric of the local community.

Enduring Legacy and Future Horizons

Over the decades, Nancy Lee Fishing Charters has not only provided countless memorable fishing experiences but has also contributed significantly to the maritime culture of Swansboro. Captain Lee’s stories, expertise, and unwavering passion for the sea continue to inspire both seasoned anglers and novices alike.
